Description SOMA Ether V2

SOMA ETHER V2 is a wide-band receiver that makes it possible to perceive the electromagnetic landscape around you.
ETHER can be described as an anti-radio that operates differently from traditional radios. Rather than tuning in to a particular radio station, it is designed to receive all of the interference and radiation that conventional radios attempt to filter out in order to produce a clear signal. ETHER captures radio waves across the frequency spectrum, ranging from hertz to gigahertz, because it lacks the tuned input circuit that limits frequencies to a narrow band for a specific station. This unique feature enables ETHER to detect and interpret the unintentional electromagnetic environment created by humans, allowing for live electromagnetic field listening and recording.

The original design of ETHER draws inspiration from the first radios of the early 1900s, which did not have tuning wheels. During that era, there were only a few radio stations, all of which broadcasted Morse code. By listening to the distinctive timbre or “voice” of each transmitter, it was possible to differentiate between them by ear.

ETHER’s compact design makes it incredibly portable and convenient to carry around. Measuring only 103x58x17mm, it easily fits in your pocket, and at a weight of just 73g with batteries, it won’t weigh you down. Furthermore, ETHER is energy efficient and consumes very little power, meaning it can operate for long periods on just two AAA batteries (over 300 hours).

ETHER incorporates both magnetic and electric components that allow it to detect radiation. To detect magnetic radiation, ETHER features a built-in magnetic antenna similar to those used in old long-wave radios. The antenna has maximum sensitivity when aligned with ETHER’s axis. By altering the orientation, angle, and position of ETHER, the sound produced by the device can be changed.

To detect electric radiation, ETHER uses antennas printed on its printed circuit board (PCB), as well as special input pins located on its anterior surface. These components allow for the detection of a wide range of electromagnetic frequencies. Combined with its magnetic antenna, ETHER is capable of perceiving and interpreting the invisible electromagnetic landscape created by humans, making it an incredibly useful tool for live electromagnetic field listening and recording.

ETHER V2 is equipped with two external antenna pins that can be used to touch any conductive material or surface, including your own body, to turn objects or yourself into a large external antenna. When touching different materials, such as metal objects found on the street, the sound produced by ETHER V2 changes, providing a unique and interesting experience. The two antenna pins are connected to different points of the circuit and interact with electromagnetic waves in distinct ways. Switching between the pins or using them both alters the sound. When used in areas far from cities, it is recommended to connect a piece of wire, 1-4 meters long, to one of the pins to produce intriguing sounds.

ETHER V2 features two wheels that control the sound and power. The upper wheel adjusts the amount of high-frequency amplification and regeneration, allowing for focus on various dynamic levels of surrounding interference, resulting in the most enriched sound possible. The lower wheel adjusts the volume.

ETHER V2 is not merely an inductive sniffer. Unlike these devices, which need to be placed close to an emitting source and contain only a coil and a low-frequency amplifier, ETHER V2 is an actual radio wave receiver with a regenerative circuit and a demodulator. Although it can detect low-frequency magnetic fields, it was designed to be part of your walks in the city and can even pick up sounds in a forest or at the seashore. ETHER V2 can also capture radiation that is far above the audio range and is much more sensitive than simple inductive sniffers, making it a unique device with different functions and implementations.

ETHER V2 is highly sensitive to digital circuitry in close proximity. The output of ETHER V2 is a regular 3.5mm headphones’ stereo jack with L and R contacts connected in parallel (ETHER V2 has a mono out). To record the sounds of ETHER an external recorder has to be used – any audio recorder will work.

Manual

Visit a concrete jungle and flip the power switch upward. Once the yellow LED illuminates, ETHER is prepared to embark on a sound expedition.
Utilize the upper wheel to fine-tune the high-frequency amplification and regeneration, honing in on the most captivating layers of sound. When there is a stronger signal, the lower the amplification should be set.
Adjust the lower wheel to blend the sound of ETHER with your own brainwaves, finding the ideal balance.
Please note that if both the VOLUME and AMPLIFICATION wheels are set to high, ETHER may experience self-feedback and emit crackling sounds. Avoid this by not setting both wheels close to maximum simultaneously. To work with a low volume, use sensitive rather than deaf headphones.
Explore your surroundings by moving and trying out different points and directions in space.
Use either one or both of the external antenna pins to touch various conductive objects. Try connecting a piece of wire to one of the antennas to discover additional interesting sounds.
If you happen to uncover a hidden treasure of sound, take a moment to reflect by remaining still, taking deep breaths, and contemplating the meaning of life…
